Tahlonega is the Indian word for gold, so the citizens named the town Dahlonega, sight of the first U.S. gold rush. Visitors can still pan for gold at the mine.

Dahlonega, as small of a town as it is, still has it's own military academy, North Georgia College.
The gold on top of the capitol building in downtown Atlanta was mined here in Dahlonega.
