Alabama

From the southern Mississippi beach to Tuscaloosa, Alabama to tour the grounds of the University of Alabama. We camped one night at a campground nearby to visit the campus twice. Some of the campus didn't even look like a college, it looked more like a city with red lights and buses driving through.

Then we traveled on to Birmingham to visit family.

Vulcan the Iron Man was created by an Italian artist named Giuseppe Moretti in 1904. Vulcan is the largest cast iron statue in the world and the largest metal statue ever made in the United States.
Vulcan is the Roman god of fire and forge (a forge is a shop with a furnace where metal is heated and hammered out into useful items). Birmingham is unique because of the availability of the raw materials necessary for making iron: coal, iron ore and limestone. By 1900, Birmingham was called the "Magic City" because of its rapid population growth due to the larger number of workers needed to produce iron.
